The United Nations refugee agency has warned that the Iran crisis is severely disrupting humanitarian aid deliveries, with supply chain costs rising sharply and refugee support operations coming under pressure. UNHCR said the cost of sending some aid to Sudan, now the world’s largest displacement crisis, has more than doubled since the conflict disrupted key shipping routes. According to the agency, insecurity around Gulf shipping lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz, has forced aid shipments to use longer and more expensive routes. Supplies that previously moved through Dubai and the Gulf are now being diverted overland through Jordan and Oman,…

Private credit borrowers may have more time before facing their biggest refinancing test, according to a Reuters analysis of filings from publicly listed business development companies. The review found that the largest loan maturity walls are not due in 2026, but are instead pushed further out into 2028 and 2029. Reuters reviewed filings from 74 business development companies, known as BDCs, and found that only about $15 billion of their $84 billion in assets mature in 2026. That suggests the private credit market may not face an immediate broad refinancing crunch, even as higher interest rates and slower earnings continue…

The US Defence Department plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, amid a spat between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war with Iran. The decision comes a day after Trump criticised Merz, who suggested the US had been “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators. In social media posts on Thursday, Trump said Merz was “doing a terrible job” and had “problems of all kinds”, including on immigration and energy. Trump has also suggested pulling US troops from Italy and Spain. The US has a significant military presence in Germany, with more than 36,000 active duty troops assigned…

Russia has announced it will scale back its annual Victory Day parade in Moscow, blaming what it described as a growing threat from Ukraine. The May 9 event, held every year in Red Square to mark the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, will not include the usual display of military hardware. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the decision was linked to heightened security risks and accused Ukraine of increased “terrorist activity.” Russia’s Defence Ministry also referred to the “current operational situation” as the reason for removing military vehicles from the parade. The change means tanks, missile…

Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich produced one of the most thrilling Champions League semi finals in recent memory, with PSG edging Bayern 5-4 in a first leg that felt more like a final than a semi final. The nine goal match immediately sparked debate among fans and pundits over whether this was the perfect antidote to modern football’s often cautious and highly structured style. The game was remarkable not only because of the scoreline, but because of the way both teams played. Instead of slowing the match down or protecting space too carefully, PSG and Bayern attacked with speed,…

Europe may feel more expensive than ever this summer, but value has not disappeared. Travelers who look beyond the most crowded capitals and luxury coastlines can still find affordable city breaks, beach escapes and cultural trips across the continent. The key is choosing destinations where accommodation, food, transport and local experiences remain reasonably priced. Popular cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice are still attractive, but higher hotel rates, tourist taxes and peak season crowds are pushing many travelers to consider smaller cities, secondary beach towns and less crowded regions. Travel experts have also noted that more visitors are…

A Premier League club could still face the risk of losing or being moved from a European place, as the race for UEFA qualification enters a complicated final stage. The situation is being watched closely because English clubs could have as many as 10 teams in Europe next season, but the final allocation depends on league positions, cup winners and UEFA rules. The main issue is that European qualification is no longer as simple as finishing in a certain position. The Premier League is already guaranteed five Champions League places because of England’s European Performance Spot. That means the top…
