Iran has reportedly fired ballistic missiles toward the joint UK US military base on Diego Garcia, marking one of the most striking developments yet in the widening conflict.
According to Reuters, which cited a Wall Street Journal report and Iran’s semi official Mehr agency, two intermediate range ballistic missiles were launched toward the base in the Indian Ocean. Neither missile is reported to have hit its target. One reportedly failed mid flight, while a US Navy warship is said to have fired an SM 3 interceptor at the other, though it remains unclear whether that interception was successful.
Diego Garcia is one of the most strategically important military sites used by the United States and Britain. A strike aimed that far from Iran would signal a major expansion in both the range and symbolism of Tehran’s response, even if the missiles did not land on the base itself. Reuters said the reported launch suggests Iran may now be willing to target Western military infrastructure far beyond the Gulf.
So far, there has been no full official account from Washington or London confirming all the details of the incident. Reuters reported that the White House and British officials had not immediately commented when the first reports emerged. Later reporting from AP said Britain condemned what it described as Iran’s attack attempt on the Diego Garcia air base.
The timing matters. The reported missile launch comes as fighting between Israel and Iran keeps spreading across the region, while the US and its allies face growing pressure over shipping security, military deployments, and the risk of a broader war. Diego Garcia has become even more sensitive in that context because of its role as a forward operating base for long range missions.
Even without a direct hit, the message behind the reported launch is hard to miss. If confirmed in full, it would show that Iran is prepared to test the reach of its missile capabilities against one of the best known Western bases in the region’s wider security map.
