Nottingham Forest have taken a major step towards Premier League survival after an impressive 5-0 away win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The result moved Forest eight points clear of the relegation zone and shifted fresh attention onto Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, who remain under pressure near the bottom of the table.
Forest started strongly and took control of the match in the first half. Trai Hume’s own goal opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus added three more goals in a six minute spell. That quick burst gave Forest a 4-0 lead before halftime and left Sunderland with no clear route back into the game.
The visitors added a fifth goal in second half stoppage time through Elliot Anderson, sealing Forest’s biggest top flight away win since April 1995. It was also a clean sheet, making the result even more valuable for a team fighting to stay in the Premier League.
Forest manager Vitor Pereira praised the performance but warned that the job is not finished. He said the team still needs more points and must keep the same mentality in the remaining matches. His message was clear: the victory was important, but Forest cannot relax yet.
The result has changed the mood around the relegation battle. According to Opta’s supercomputer, Forest now have a 92.7% chance of staying in the Premier League. West Ham and Tottenham still have games in hand, but their survival pressure has increased as Forest have created a stronger gap above the bottom three.
For Sunderland, the defeat was a painful reminder of how unforgiving Premier League football can be. Manager Regis Le Bris admitted his side dropped their standards and were punished heavily. Sunderland have now conceded more than three goals in back to back league matches for the first time since 1958.
The bigger question now is whether the relegation race is becoming a fight mainly between Spurs and West Ham. Forest are not mathematically safe yet, but after such a dominant away win, they look far closer to survival than they did before kickoff. Their next challenge will be to maintain this form and avoid letting the pressure return in the final weeks of the season.
