Coventry City have secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after a tense 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Frank Lampard’s side needed only one point to confirm their return to the top flight and delivered it through a late equaliser from Bobby Thomas.
Blackburn looked set to delay Coventry’s promotion party when Ryoya Morishita gave the home side the lead early in the second half. But Thomas rose in the 84th minute to head in from a free kick, sparking huge celebrations among the more than 7,000 travelling Coventry supporters.
The result ends Coventry’s long wait to return to England’s top division, having last played in the Premier League in the 2000-01 season. Since then, the club has gone through financial problems, stadium disputes, several relegations and even a fall into League Two before rebuilding its way back up the football pyramid.
Lampard’s achievement is especially significant because he took over the club in November 2024 when Coventry were struggling in 17th place. His leadership has transformed the team, and the Sky Blues have now sealed promotion with three matches still to play.
Coventry remain top of the Championship with 86 points from 43 games and can now turn their focus toward finishing the season as champions. For the fans, however, the main prize has already been secured: Coventry City are back in the Premier League after a generation away.
